Staten Island Boro President Vito Fossella held a press conference today to share updated information regarding fencing that was installed recently on the wall overlooking the Martling Avenue pond. The elected officials of Staten Island were about to file a law suit against the City of New York to get it taken down when they received word yesterday that Mayor Eric Adams authorized the fence to be removed.

Attending the announcement were: Staten Island District Attorney Michael McMahon; City Council members Kamila Hanks, David Carr, Joseph Borelli; State Assemblyman Charles Fall and Assemblyman Sam Pirozzolo.

Shortly after 8 am this morning, a white SUV jumped a curb, knocked down fencing, a tree and a USPS mailbox on Forest Avenue in front of the Cafe Milano Restaurant. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene. FDNY engine company 156 responded, and waited for NYPD. There were no injuries.

Staten Island Boro President Vito Fossella was joined by City Council representatives Kamila Hanks and David Carr at a rally to protest a new safety fence installed by the DOT. On the edge of Clove Lakes Park in Staten Island’s West Brighton neighborhood. The park its called the Central Park of Staten Island. The fence was recently installed without notice to local government and community organizations. The rally, organized on just 24 hour notice, attracted nearly 100 people. The message was that the fence must be removed, and a more acceptable barrier erected fitting into the character of the park crossing.

The fence did not meet any of the city criteria for reasons to install it.

The tri-state area has been under a drought watch for several weeks. In the past few days, many brush fires have erupted in very dry wooded areas of the tri-state area. On Saturday morning, the smoke from these fires drifted into Manhattan and other parts of the city. The sky-line of Manhattan was barely visible at 11 am while the smell of smoke permeated the North Shore of Staten Island.

The 249th birthday of the United States Marine Corps was celebrated in Staten Island on Friday, November 01, 2024 by The Sergeant Angel Mendez Detachment of the Marine Corps League Detachment 246. The actual birthday is November 10. The evening began with advancing the colors, retiring the colors, an invocation by the Chaplain. Opening remarks were followed by a reading of the POW/MIA Ceremony followed by the reading of the Missing Marine Ceremony. The distinguished guest was Sgt Major Jaime S Alvarez, Sergeant Major-Site Support of the 6th Communications Battalion.

The traditional cake cutting ceremony began with the cake wheeled in flanked by an honor guard. The guest of honor was served the first slice, then the oldest Marine in attendance getting his, who then shared it with the youngest Marine at the Ball.

Dinner, dancing and 50/50 filled the rest of the evening.

The Staten Island Running Association presented it’s annual Marathon Legends Gala on Wednesday, October 31, 2024 at the Staaten in Staten Island, NY.

The event was chaired by Jeff Benjamin. Numerous professional athletes and Olympians were present. Athletes marched in during a parade of nations. They included Joan Benoit Samuelson, Bill Rodgers, Tony Staynings, Jim Spivey, Bob Beamon, Dave Wottle, Steve Jones, Geoff Smith, Matt Centrowitz Sr and Elliott Denman.

Awards were presented to the top high school distance runner in both girls and boys categories and they also honored long time volunteers in the running community of Staten Island. The Pvt Joseph Merrill/ Fr Vincent Capodanno American Legion Post was presented a check for $1500 to use as they start up their newly combined chapter.

The NYRRC Staten Island Half Marathon started at 8 am on a cool Sunday morning. This is the final in a series of five half marathons held in each of the boroughs of New York. Expected runners totaled near 10,000, and they were started in different waves.

The photographs posted show the aftermath of a three alarm fire the morning after the blaze. On Tuesday evening, October 08, 2024, a three alarm fire burned in a church on Castleton Avenue at West Street in the West Brighton area of Staten Island. The three story church was vacent. During the fighting of the fire, a call was made by FDNY officials for jumpers in the building. The building department was called to inspect the property, and Fire Marshalls operated on Wednesday.

Douglas A Munro Memorial

Douglas A Munro, who was a Signalman First Class in the US Coast Guard died on September 27, 1942 on Guadalcanal while evacuating a battalion of Marines who were trapped by Japanese forces. He was killed in action. In 1943, President Franklin D Roosevelt posthumously presented him with the Medal of Honor. He is the only Coast Guardsman to receive that honor.

A monument and plaque honors him at Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island, home to Sector New York of the US Coast Guard.

A brief ceremony was held there this morning. A color guard presented the flags, and remarks were made by Sector Commander Captain Jon Andrechik, and guest speaker a US Marine Corp Lt Colonel. Members of the Marine Corps League shot a volley of 15 rounds in honor of Petty Officer Munro.

The Staten Island Mexican Independence Day was celebrated a day early on Staten Island. The actual day is September 16. Marchers, bands, and costumed marchers enjoyed the festivities as they made their way along the parade route. The route followed Port Richmond Avenue which is now home to a large hispanic population. Crowds lined the route on a beautiful weather day.

The corner of Forest and Oakland Avenues was named for the late Santina DiStefano, who owned and operated Moretti’s Bakery at that location. “Santa” as she was known, was beloved by the community. District Attorney Michael McMahon initiated the street renaming process with local elected officials to make this happen.
Santa’s family, customers, and friends gathered for the celebration, including her daughter Cinzia who was a partner in the business, and continues to run it. For the celebration, a food truck treated the guests, and gifts of popcorn, purple cotton candy and t-shirts were distributed. The Rev Louis Jerome, Pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel blessed the street sign.

The University of Notre Dame Club held it’s 22nd Annual Eve of Remembrance in honor of the victims from Staten Island who perished on 9/11 and others who have since died of 9/11 related diseases.

The Malloy Group performed sacred music before the procession.

The evening began with a procession of clergy, military and Holy Name Societies, as well as a color guard from the Knights of Columbus.

Bagpipers welcomed the procession with a rendition of “Coming Home”.

The concelebrated Mass was led by principal celebrant and homilist Most Reverend Peter Byrne, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New York.

Communion gifts were brought to the altar by FDNY and military members.

The names of the deceased were read by club members and students from Island Catholic Schools.

A Mass and wreath laying ceremony was held in honor of Father Vincent Capadanno to honor 57 years since he died in the line of duty while ministering to wounded troops in Vietnam. Fr Capadanno was a member of the Maryknoll Order. The Mass was celebrated by Bishop Peter Byrne, episcopal vicar of Staten Island. Assisting him were Fr Edward Shellito and Fr Joseph Lamar, also members of Maryknoll.

The wreaths placed in front of the statue of Fr Capadanno at the chapel were placed by several veteran organizations from Staten Island.

An open air concert was performed by the Staten Island Philharmonic on Saturday, August 24, 2024. Guests were encouraged to bring their own chairs. The concert was performed at the overlook under the Verrazzano Bridge starting at 6 PM. The theme of the musical selections was a tribute to the anniversary of the National Parks Service who operate areas of Fort Wadsworth, including the location of the concert. The Philharmonic is under the direction of Dr Raymond Wheeler. An original work “overture of Hope” by Dr Howard Fox had it’s world premier during the concert.

Shortly after noon on Tuesday, August 13, a NYPD Police Car was involved in an accident on the east bound lanes of the Staten Island Expressway near the Slosson Avenue Exit. According to reports, an NYPD sergeant was hospitalized after the incident. According to reports, the sergeant collided with a barrier.

The Forest Regional Residents Civic Association gathered on Saturday, June 29 at 8am for a beautification project in conjuction with the Department of Transportation (DOT). Donations to purchase plants and supplies were solicited from neighbors, and they also received donations fro Gary’s Landscaping and Giradi’s Garden Center. The planters were given to the group by the DOT. The volunteers planted and watered four large planters.

A service was held in Tompkinsville, Staten Island on Thursday, June 06, 2024 to honor the Staten Island's who were killed during World War II. Members of the community gathered along with members of the American Legion, District Attorney Michael McMahon, and representatives of local elected officials. "Bless America" was sung by Teri Tarangelo, a daughter of a D Day Veteran.
The memorial is located at the intersection of Van Duzer Street and St Paul's Avenue.

The 105th Annual Memorial Day Parade kicked off today with sunny skies that turned to dark and rainy conditions before it ended.

Marchers included the members of the USS Bataan, a visiting Navy ship in for Fleet Week, as well as local politicians and community groups. Staten Island is home to a large Veteran population and they turned out to view and march along the parade route.

Flags were placed on the graves of military veterans at St Peter’s Cemetery in West Brighton, Staten Island by members of the Rolling Thunder group and assisted by Girl Scouts. They took down the old flags and replaced them with new ones on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend.

The Coast Guard Sector New York held a change-of-command ceremony where Capt Zeita Merhant, outgoing Sector NY commander passed the baton to Captain Jonathan Andrechik, incoming Sector New York commander. Sector New York is located at Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, NY.

On the stage of the show Hamilton, the National Anthem was sung by Tamar Greene, who plays George Washington in Hamilton.

The ceremony was held on the stage of the Broadway play “Hamilton”, who founded the US Coast Guard. During the ceremony, Captain Merchant was also “frocked”, which is an early promotion, to Rear Admiral. Joining Merchant was her Mother, siblings, neice and nephew and numerous extended family and friends. Her family gathered with her on stage as she was presented with her gold epaulets and new uniform hat. She became the first African American Woman to achieve that position in the Coast Guard.

Presiding at the ceremony was Admiral Linda Fagan, Commandant of the Coast Guard, and the first woman to head a military service. Also on hand was Vincent W Patton, III, Eighth Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard (ret); RADM John W Mauger, Commander, First Coast Guard District’ RADM Stephen Rochon, USCG (ret).

The NYC FDNY Bagpipers played Auld Lang Sine to conclude the event.

The Worm Moon Eclipse took place overnight on Monday, March 25, 2024. The peek was at 3:15 am. Experts described it as a smudge on the bottom of the moon. I photographed it in intervals for one hour around and after the peek, and really could not tell the difference.

For the second time in two weeks, another St Patrick's Day in Staten Island was hosted by the Forest Avenue Business Improvement District. This second parade was inclusive of LGBTQ marchers. The parade held two weeks ago did not allow the LGBTQ to participate. In addition, the traditional breakfast held at Club Jody's pre parade was also brought back.

The gathering was in celebration of the club's 33rd Annual Bread of Life Drive (BOLD). The theme was "Fight Hunger, Not Each Other". The event was hosted by Joseph Delaney, and attended by members of the Staten Island schools who are participating in the food drive. Also on hand were some representatives of a few of the charities who will receive the food collected... Jewish Community Center, Catholic Charities, and Project Hospitality.

This morning, the 33rd Annual Bread of Life Drive on Staten Island volunteers assembled at two locations on the Island where they picked up information boxes and unassembled boxes. They were delivered to most of the schools on the Island. The boxes will be filled with donated food and baby items, and then picked up at the end of next week. The boxes will be delivered to Monsignor Farrell High School on Saturday, March 23 and distributed to various charities in Staten Island and Brooklyn.

The 33rd Annual Bread of Life Drive (BOLD) is getting ready to launch next Monday. Today, members of the club gathered at the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin (Mt Loretto) to assemble and prepare the boxes that will be distributed to schools this coming Monday. The boxes will be picked up loaded with donated food items on Friday, March 22, 2024. The food will be distributed to recipient charities on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at Monsignor Farrell HS.

The first of two parades was held on Sunday, March 03, 2024. The exclusion of the LGBTQ groups resulted in the lpocal BID getting a permit for a second, inclusive parade to be held in two weeks.

Today’s parade had the usual fights broken up by police, roudy teens, long lines to get into the bars, and the bagpipers of many different organizations.

Boro President Vito Fossella and Congresswoman Nicole Maliotakis did march. The democrat officials boycotted.

The annual Forest Avenue Mile, a one mile run that proceeds the Staten Island St Patrick’s Day Parade and run entirely on Forest Avenue, started promptly at 11 AM this morning. The run begins at Walbrooke Avenue and finishes at Elizabeth Avenue. This is the the first of two parades that will be held in honor of St Patrick’s Day. Today is the first, and the next will be on Sunday, March 17.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams traveled to Staten Island on Friday, February 23, 2024 to break ground for the new recreational facility named for Mary Cali Dalton in the St George neighborhood of the island. It will replace the old Cromwell Center that fell into the water after Superstorm Sandy. The building is named for Mary Cali Dalton who was the Chief of Recreation. On hand were her three daughters and grandchildren. Her daughter Mary Cali spoke during the ceremony. She is a supervisor in the NYC Dept of Sanitation. Also on hand was Sue Donoghue, Commissioner, NYC Department of Parks and Recreation; Debbie Rose, former NYC Councilwoman who was instrumental in getting this project approved, and members of the NYC DDC.

The newest exhibition at the Staten Island Museum “Taking Care: The Black Angels of Sea View Hospital” held it’s opening reception on Thursday, January 25, 2024. The exhibit explores the Black nursing staff at Sea View Hospital during the years the hospital treated patients diagnosed with turberculosis. For sale at the museum was a recently released book “The Black Angels” by Maria Smilios who wrote about these women.

A massive warehouse fire burned most of the day on January 05, 2024 in Elizabeth, NJ sending plumes of smoke across the Kill Van Kull into Staten Island. The building was an old Singer Sewing Machine factory that was vacant for many years.

Photos depict the day after a fire on Monday, January 01, a fire broke out in a home in the West Brighton area of Staten Island. Responding FDNY companies removed a child and began to perform CPR. She was taken to a local hospital where she died. The child, 7 year old Rory DeChristoforo, was the daughter of Mark and Meaghan DeCristoforo. She was the youngest of four children. A wake and funeral Mass were attended by thousands of mourners.

The community and local Catholic Schools began fundraising for the family. Mr DeChristoforo is the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at St Peter’s Boys High School.

The Reformed Protestant Dutch Church on Staten Island

National Wreaths Across America Day was observed on Saturday, December 17, 2023 at the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church on Staten Island in partnership with the Historic Port Richmond Preservation Association. A service preceded the wreath laying. The Invocation was by Elder Warren A Mac Kenzie, STD, Pastor, followed by the presentation of the Colors, Pledge of Allegiance, singing of the National Anthem, and presentation of wreaths for each of the armed services plus one honoring those who served in the Public Health Service, NOAA, Gold Star Families and First Responders.

The congregation then exited to the the cemeteries that surround the Church to place wreaths at the graves of veterans. Many of them at this church date to three wars: the War for Independence; the War of 1812; and the Civil War.

The church is listed in the National Register of Historical Places.

The Forest Avenue Business Improvement District held a "Holiday Stroll" that featured Santa Claus in a horse drawn carriage. He tossed candy to the children who waited for him to appear along the Avenue. Local merchants welcomed the guests during a two hour event in West Brighton.

Sometime over night from December 01- 02 two drug stores on Forest Avenue were broken into. The stores are just a few feet from each other. Shortly after 7 AM, each store had a NYPD patrol car parked in front of the stores whose front doors were smashed.

A Parade of Nations opened the annual Marathon Week Legend’s Dinner that was held on Wednesday evening in Staten Island. The dinner is presented by the Staten Island Running Association (SIRA). Guests included multiple NYC Men’s Marathon winners Rod Dixon of New Zealand, Bill Rodgers, USA, Steve Jones of Great Britain, Geoff Smith a two-tiime Boston Marathon winner, two-time British Olympian Tony Staynings and numerous Olympians including Matt Centrowitz Sr, Bill Jankunis, and Bob Beamon.

SIRA presented a check to the Joseph F Merrrell Post of the American Legion.

Awards were presented to members of the Staten Island Running Community including the Vic Navarra Award to Bill Kelly, who passed away this summer. His widow Joanne presented the award to Dr Kerry J Kelly, daughter of Bill., who accepted on behalf of her family. Also receiving awards were Louis Vasquez; Aborn Etchison, Patricia Mulligan, and top high school competitors. Dr Ted Strange received the Arnold Obey Good Guy Award.

The staging area and start of the NYC Marathon takes place at Ft Wadsworth in Staten Island. The property is shared by several federal agencies: The US Coast Guard, the National Parks Service and the US Army. The massive event starts to set up the temporary infrastructure more than a week before. On Sunday, October 29, fencing was in place to define different areas, port-a-potties were lined up, and tents were placed around the different areas.

Delafield Avenue at North Mada Avenue

Shortly after 2:30 pm, a woman driving an SUV on Delafield Avenue towards the stop sign on North Mada Avenue. She flipped the vehicle onto its side, after colliding with a parked car. According to witnesses, the woman heard her dog bark in the vehicle, turned to it and flipped. Numerous local residents called 911. Multiple units from the FDNY, NYPD and EMS responded. The car was up-righted by ESU. On the scene was another woman who arrived on the scene to assist driver The driver was not taken by ambulance and remained on scene.

The New York Road Runners Club held the last of the individual Half Marathons that each boro hosts during the year. This morning, two waves of runners started on Richmond Terrace for the 13.1 mile event. The course took the runners from St George near the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, to School Road, in the shadow of the Verrazzano Bridge, continuing onto Fr Capodanno Boulevard, where they turned around at Midland Avenue, then back through Ft Wadsworth, onto Bay Street, and finishing up near the starting line.

On the anniversary of his death on September 27, 1942 Douglas A Munro, Signalman First Class USCG, was remembered for his heroic action in World War II. He saved a battalion of Marines, but was killed in that action. President Roosevelt posthumously presented him with the Medal of Honor, the only Coastguardsman to ever receive it. The ceremony was held at USCG Sector New York. Command Master Chief Robert Reimer was Master of Ceremonies. Chaplain Keith Connor delivered the invocation; Captain Jon Andrechik spoke about Douglas Munro; and a USMC Marine Master Sargent from 6 Communications Battalion in Brooklyn also spoke. The Marine Corps League fired a 21 gun salute and taps were played by a USCG Auxiliary member.

A Mass of Installation of Fr Rhey P Garcia as Pastor of The Church of Sacred Heart in Staten Island was celebrated on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at the church. The afternoon Mass was overflowing and standing room only. The Principal Celebrant was The Most Rev Edmund Whalen, DD, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New York. Msgr William Belford led a contingent of concelebrating priests and deacons. Fr Rhey’s parents flew in from the Philippines for the service, and other family members traveled from the United Kingdom and Los Angeles. Many friends, clergy and parishioners attended. A reception followed in the school’s auditorium where food and deserts were served. The Choir from Moore Catholic High School performed during the evening.

Hurricane Lee is churning in the Atlantic with the potential for heavy storms and damage. Two passenger ships diverted their planned cruises and sailed into the upper bay in New York. The Seven Seas Mariner” and the “Norwegian Escape” have dropped anchor this weekend. The two ships have created a photo opportunity for local people.

On a day when the temperature was 94 degrees, FDNY members were called to a second alarm fire in the Stapleton area of Staten Island. The fire was in a private residence and fought on the second and attic floors. After the fire was called probably will hold, firefighters used wet towels and cold drinks to cool off.

The rare Super Blue Moon appeared in the night sky. Called the Blue Moon not for its color but because it is the second full moon of the month. This Blue Moon was also very close to earth, enabling it to be brighter than normal.

The USCG Barque Eagle, the training ship from the USCG Academy, paid a visit to New York City this weekend. Cadets training to be officers embark on a sailing cruise during their time at the Academy. The ship was acquired by the United States from Germany after WWII. Guests were transported to the ship, anchored off the Statue of Liberty from Pier 16, and then sailed aboard the Eagle back to Pier 17 in Manhattan.

On Saturday, July 08, 2023 at approximaely 19:53 hours, police in the 120 pct received a 911 call of a robbery. The responding officers found a 35 year old man with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was removed to Richmond University Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased. Police have stated that they do not know if any property was removed as they continue their investigation. The male was the owner of the business, “Manor Deli and Convenience”. Police continue to search for the perpetrators.

For over 40 years, a Five Mile Race was held in West Brighton, Staten Island at 9am on the Fourth of July. The early races were in honor of Pepper Martin, a local resident who died in an accident on the Jersey Shore. After many years, the race directors decided to retire and give up the race. A new family stepped in to take it over and name it after their daughter, Arielle Newman, who was an outstanding runner at Notre Dame Academy. She died after an allergic reaction to a pain relief cream. The race was suspended during Covid 19, and not brought back. So, this morning, a group of runners decided to run the course unofficially.

Wildfires in Canada have produced dangerous levels of smoke in the air in New York City and Staten Island. The smoke along Richmond Terrace, Bay Street and the Kill Van Kull have blanketed the harbor to obscure the skyline of New Jersey, Manhattan, and the Verrazzano Bridge, which is barely visible as a ship sails under it.

The sky was blue, and the temperature in the 70’s contributing to a perfect weather day for the 104th Staten Island Memorial Day Parade.

Parade marchers included the Marine Corps League, American Legion, Vietnam Veterans, and other veteran’s groups. The parade marchers included several High School Bands, Boy and Girl Scout Troops, and the Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Veterans. A contingent from the Fr Capodanno School also joined the line of march. Fr Capodanno was a Staten Island native, a Medal of Honor Recipient, who was killed in action in Vietnam.

One new addition was a group from Curtis HS on Staten Island who marched holding photographs and names of their graduates who have died in action = during the many military conflicts and wars.

Wednesday, May 24 the USS Wasp held a reception on board at their pier in Manhattan that featured the Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable Carlos Del Toro.

Friday, May 26 the Navy League hosted the officers of the ships in town including the USN, Italy and Canada.

Sunday, May 28 the American Legion Merrill Post held a remembrance ceremony at a monument along the Kill Van Kull in Staten Island.

Sunday, May 28 flags are displayed at graves at Fairview Cemetary in Staten Island.

Sunday, May 28 Sacred Heart Church in Staten Island held a flag raising on their front lawn to remember all service members.

A Parade of Ships kicked off Fleet Week in New York City. Shortly after 8am, ships from the United States Navy, US Coast Guard, US Naval Academy and NATO allies sailed under the Verrazzanno Bridge and into New York Harbor where they will be open for visitors throughout the Memorial Day weekend. The ships participating were the USS WASP; HMS Scott; HNMCS Glace Bay; IRS Virginio Fasan; USCG Warren Deyampert; four US Naval Academy Patrol Craft; USS Oak Hill; USNS Newport; USCGC Legare.

Riders in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour make their way up the overpass at Hannah and Bay Streets in Staten Island. The annual TD Five Boro Bike Tour was held on Sunday, May 07, 2023. The 40 mile tour begins in Manhattan and rides throughout all five boros, finishing at Ft Wadsworth in Staten Island. From the finish, many riders then make their way to the Staten Island Ferry to head to their final destination.

The USS Cooperstown, the first naval ship named to honor the 70 baseball Hall of Famers who served the United States during war time was commissioned on Saturday, May 06, 2023 at Pier 88 in Manhattan. The ship is a Freedom-class littoral combat ship (LCS). Participating in the ceremony were The Honorable Carlos Del Toro, the 78th Secretary of the Navy; Governor of New York Kathy Hochul, Jane Forbes Clark, Chairman of the Board of Directors of The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, and Hall of Fame members Joe Torre and Johnny Bench.

A four alarm fire blazed in five attached town houses on Thursday, April 13, 2023. The vinyl siding was melted, and cars were towed away on Friday Morning. According to Fire Marshals, the blaze was started by “carelessly smoking materials that were not properly disposed of. More than 180 FDNY members responded. Nine firefighters suffered minor injuries.”

Three businesses were victims to break-in and robberies overnight. Front doors were smashed at the Northside Coffee shop at Forest and Pelton Avenues, the Killah Koffee Shop at Castleton and Pelton Avenues, and the newly shut down Nurenberger Restaurant on Castleton Avenue at Regan Avenue. They are the latest in a string of similar crimes in the neighborhood in recent months.

The FDNY held a press conference at noon today at in Staten Island to detail the rescue of five children the evening before. On Tuesday evening at 5 pm, five young boys entered a tunnel alongside a lake in Clove Lakes Park at Martliings Avenue. They proceeded to travel on their knees for approximately 1300 feet, winding up in the tunnel near the Staten Island Zoo on Clove Road. The children were in the space for approximately one hour, at which time one of the children used a cell phone to dial 911 for help. FDNY units were dispatched to the scene, where they found the children’s backpacks and jackets at the opening in the park. The tunnel oopening was 40” at the beginning, but narrowed to 30”. A FDNY Rescue 5 member entered the tunnel where the children had also entered, and began the search for them. Meanwhile, other FDNY members began to open 10 manholes from the street progressively as they tried to located the children. Thirty minutes after the rescuers arrived, the children were found and removed via one of the manholes. The were cold and wet, and taken to Richmond University Medical Center for evaluation.

The annual St Patrick’s Day Parade was held on Forest Avenue in West Brighton, Staten Island today mired in controversy. The parade organizers denied access to a group representing the LGBTQ+ community that wanted to march under their own banner. Many groups backed out of the parade. Prior to the start of the Parade and One Mile Run/Walk, a press conference was held where supporters of the group spoke.

Many participants in the run/walk participated in support of the banned group.

Mayor Eric Adams walked in the run/walk with the Pride Center of Staten Island group and banner, but he did not participate in the parade. Local politicians that did march in the parade were Staten Island Boro President Vito Fossella and Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis.

St Peter’s Cemetery, Staten Island, NY

A memorial service for Police Officer Rocco W Laurie was held on the 51st anniversary of his murder. Patrolman Laurie was on patrol with his partner Patrolman Gregory Foster when they were assassinated by members of the Black Liberation Army while walking their patrol in Manhattan’s 9th Precinct in 1972. The two had served in the Marine Corps together in Vietnam and requested they be assigned to the same precinct. Laurie is buried in St Peter’s Cemetery in the West Brighton area of Staten Island.

At the memorial today, speakers included District Attorney Michael McMahon; Laurie’s widow, Adelaide Rocco, and Fr Louis Jerome, Pastor of St Peter’s Church.

The Marine Corps League of Staten Island held a 21 gun salute, and a wreath was placed at Laurie’s gravesite.

Former NYPD Stabbed

Wednesday evening, January 11, 2023

There was an altercation involving a former NYPD officer, Nichols Nelson. He was dropping off his two children on Elizabeth Street, when an individual identified as Eric Wilson confronted him and stabbed him. Mr Nelson was taken to Richmond University Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Mr Wilson has been arrested and charged with murder, 2 counts of assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

On Thursday morning, blood can still be seen on the sidewalk as well as other items at the Elizabeth Street location.

Parade of Ships

A parade of ships sailed under the Verrazzano Bridge shortly after 10 am today. They passed the Statue of Liberty, and then headed up the Hudson River where they will be open for tours today and tomorrow. They will be moored at Pier 86. The ships were the USS Arlington, with sailors and marines standing along the rails; the UCSCG Cutter Lawrence Lawson; and the USCG Cutter Penobscot Bay. The ships are in town for the Veteran's Day Parade in NYC on Friday morning. Escorting the parade was a FDNY Fire Boat and two NYPD Helicopters.

Veteran’s Day Tribute

The Kiwanis Club of Staten Island invited veterans and family members to a remembrance brunch in the parking lot of The Staaten on Saturday, November 05, 2022. The brunch followed the placement of individual American Flags along the fence surrounding the property on Forest Avenue and Bement Avenue. The National Anthem was sung, and Bagpipers played for the gathered members of the local American Legions.

The Forest Regional Residents’ Civic Association held a “West Brighton Litter Clean-up and Daffodil Planting” on Forest and Castleton Avenues on Saturday, November 05, 2022. Residents and friends joined together to clean up and spruce the neighborhood.

The Marine Corps Ball

The Marine Corps League of Staten Island, Angel Mendez Detachment, held their annual Marine Corps Ball on Friday, November 04, 2022 at The Staaten in Staten Island, New York. The opening ceremony included a color guard, cake cutting with a sword, and sharing the cake with the guest of honor, the oldest and the youngest marines in attendance, and the missing soldier ceremony.

The Staten Island Half Marathon is part of the New York Road Runners series of 13.1 mile races in each of the

five boroughs of New York City. Today was Staten Island’s turn. The race was broken into two waves of runners,

starting at 8 am on Bay Street in the St George section of the island. The runners ran towards the Verrazzano

Bridge, then followed the roadway to Fr Capadanno Boulevard, and reversed their path. The weather was sunny

and cool, but that did not deter the crowds and one runner who ran shirtless.

 HMS Queen Elizabeth

Tuesday, September 27, 2022: The HMS Queen Elizabeth, a aircraft carrier from Great Britain, has arrived in New York Harbor for a visit. The ship is in town to host a two-day Anglo-American defense conference. Originally the HMS Prince of Wales was scheduled for the visit, but mechanical issues forced the ship to be replaced by the HMS Queen Elizabeth.

 Douglas Munro Remembrance

The United States Coast Guard held a memorial service at Sector New York in Staten Island for Douglas Munro, the only coastie to earn the Medal of Honor. He received the award for saving the lives of Marines in World War II but was killed during that action. Each year, the USCG Sector New York and the Marine Corps League hold a remembrance by a plaque at Sector honoring his heroic actions.

 Dorothy Day Ferryboat

September 16, 2022

The new Dorothy Day Ferryboat, one of three new boats to enter the Staten Island fleet is towed into New York Harbor after a two week journey from the shipbuilding facility in the Gulf of Mexico. The boat sailed under the Verrazzano Bridge, past the Statue of Liberty, then onto to Caddell Dry Dock where it was cleaned, tested, and prepped for service in the near future.

Anthony Varvaro, a Staten Island native and resident who was a Port Authority Police Officer and former Major League Baseball pitcher was killed by a wrong way driver in a head on collision on the morning of September 11, 2022 while heading into work for the annual 9/11 memorial at Ground Zero. Anthony left behind a wife and four children. He was buried in St Peter’s Cemetary in West Brighton, Staten Island.

The USCG Sector New York held a 9/11 remembrance during morning colors of Friday, September 09, 2022. The colors were posted, and a 9/11 first responder spoke to the gathering. Representatives from the USCG, FDNY, NYPD, and the National Parks Service were in attendance. The overlook at Ft Wadsworth looks out into New York Harbor, and lower Manhattan.

Representing the union was Eric Bischoff who was joined by fellow UFA delegates and on duty fireman in front of Engine 161/Ladder 81 on Mc Clean Avenue in the South Beach area of Staten Island.

The morning after a fire at 77 Gary Court on Friday evening left a firefighter in critical condition investigators and cleanup crews were on site. One resident of the townhome was rescued from the third floor. The FDNY firefighter is from Ladder 166, and was removed to Staten Island University Hospital.

An All-Hands fire was first reported at 10:24 am Wednesday morning (08-10-2022) for fire in a private dwelling, on Simondson Place in Staten Island. Fire reports said searches in the fire apartment were delayed due to clutter. One fireman was spotted cooling his head with water alongside his rig.

The United States Coast Guard celebrated it's 232nd birthday. The Coast Guard was founded in New York City by Alexander Hamilton, so the festivities at Sector New York take on a more serious celebration.

In addition, the USCG Eagle (the training ship for USCGA Cadets) sailed into New York Harbor under the Verrazzano Bridge later that afternoon. The three masted ship is visiting New York City for several days.

A man armed with a knife barricaded himself in a trailer outside the Emergency Room at RUMC at approximately 10:30 am. The hospital has used the trailer for patient evaluation outside the main ER while undergoing renovations for a new facility. The man was apprehended 15 minutes later, and admitted for observation.

Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident

Memorials have been set up by mourners at the site of a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Sunday evening, claiming the lives of three teens. The 16 year old driver was taken to a local hospital in critical condition following the accident. The red mustang, reported to belong to his mother, collided with a black SUV on Hylan Boulevard near Richard Avenue shortly before 9 PM in the Pleasant Plains area of Staten Island. The teen driver was operating on a learners permit, and the three teen passengers were reportedly not wearing seat belts. The driver of the other vehicle, who was making a left turn at the time, was driving with a NY State suspended license. He and his three passengers were not seriously injured.

The annual Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks display begins with the barges filled with the explosives at a pier in Staten Island’s Stapleton waterfront. This photo shows the barge hours before it was moved along with four other barges for the display in the East River.

Police in the 120 PCT responded to a report of a man shot at 3:35 AM at the bar “Shakers”, located at 772 Richmond Terrace in Staten Island. He was reportedly shot in the face, and removed by ambulance to Richmond University Medical Center for treatment. At 10 AM, a police car sat guard outside the location.

Deputy Chief Vincent Mandala, FDNY, was buried today at St Teresa Church in Staten Island. He died of 9/11 related illness. The department gathered for the funeral, including FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh.
